"Haven't posted in quite a while and wanted to let you guys know about our ride in Iceland. For starters the worse road over there is better than our BEST road here in Illinois AND the variey of off road conditions is to die for.
There is no "last call" in Iceland. You can walk out of a bar at 4:30 in the morning and be in sunlight. Right now the sun shines pretty much 24 hours a day. The Icelandic women,......let's just say that the whole country is in the right end of the gene pool and leave it at that. EVERYBODY speaks English and speaks it almost as well as we do. The country actually reminded me a lot of Maui.....volcanoes, waterfalls, mountains, lava flows, etc. Only difference is there are very few trees in Iceland. Climatewise it hits a high of 61-62 during the "day" and goes down to maybe 48 at night (day also!) With a population of only 280,000 people and 140,000 of them being in Reykjavik, the roads are very uncrowded and stress free. We even got to attend there big bike rally "The Snigla (means snail - sort of an in joke)Rally. Bikers came from as far away as South Africa, Norway, Holland and the UK. My riding buddy Richard I think took the cake, he came all the way from Maui...14 time zones away. We rode BMW F650's. Mine had Michelin Anakees and I was so impressed I am putting them on my 1100GS. They handled all the different off road terrains we encountered (gravel, lava, dirt, sand, etc) and stuck like glue to both wet and dry ashphalt. Our tour was set up by Biking Viking http://www.bikingviking.is/ and I can't say enough good things about these guys. I had never ridden off road and my buddy Rochard had just returned to motorcycling after a 20 year hiatus. Our guide, Njall Gunnlaugsson (pronounced "Knee-oll") got absolutely the most out of both of us every day. The beauty of this country is 2nd to none. The riding experience extraordinary. Our guide was ideal, he knew the right roads and the best places to stay. The bikes were set up right and did the job. I encourage anybody who is looking for an adventure to try Iceland. You won't be disappointed. I am posting a photo of me crossing a stream/river. Before I left I would have given you 20-1 odds against me EVER doing this. From what I hear August is actually the best month to go. If you want to try and schedule something you can e-mail Njall at: Njáll Gunnlaugsson [okukennsla@simnet.is] Guess my picture is too big to upload. If you want to see it e-mail me at jkelleher@arcca.com"
